If you are experiencing sudden shrills or severe pain in your teeth without any particular reason, your doctor might probably ask you to go for a Root Canal treatment. But what exactly is a Root Canal Treatment? Here’s an answer to all your questions regarding Root Canal treatment.
Root Canal Treatment: What is the procedure about?
Root Canal Treatment or RCT is a dental procedure which is conducted to relieve pain caused due to infection in the roots of the tooth. The inflamed pulpy matter that gets accumulated in the roots is removed then the roots of the tooth are cleaned & disinfected and finally a dental filling is added inside those hollow channels to prevent further infection or damage.
RCT or Root Canal Treatment is generally suggested by the dentist when oral bacteria invade the pulpy matters inside the channel of your tooth. If the tooth already has a cavity and it remains unnoticed for a considerable period of time, the pulp inside the tooth gets infected. The infected pulps then cause pain in the nerve endings of the tooth.
People often are ignorant and do not feel the necessity for a regular dental check. This type of negligence leads to severe tooth damage and causes unbearable pain. Also if a tooth gets cracked due to any trauma or accident, one might not get to notice the crack. Keeping the cracked tooth untouched for a long time can also lead to root pain. What does a Root canal procedure involve?
As you visit the clinic for a dental check-up, your dentist will do X-rays of your tooth. An X-ray will help the dentist to diagnose the issue and find out the severity of the issue. According to the X-ray report, he will suggest a treatment plan.
Here are the steps of a Root Canal procedure:
- Local Anesthesia- Safe medications such as oral sedatives, nitrous oxide etc are given in the affected area by the dentist to help the muscles relax.
- Before the actual treatment begins a rubber dam is placed.
- Next, the dentist will drill the cap of the tooth and make a small hole to get access to the infected pulp.
- With the help of tiny tools, the infected blood vessels and nerves are removed.
- Next, the chambers will be cleaned & disinfected and the chamber will be filled with some rubbery material (filling).
- The tooth will be finally sealed and a customized crown cap will be placed over the tooth.
Note that RCT is not performed in one session, but the patient might have to go for at least three to four sessions to get the treatment completely done.
